They hit the summit on Saturday after Ryan Philpott’s first-half hat-trick and a Liam Middleton strike earned a 4-0 win over Holmesdale.

And they stayed put on Bank Holiday Monday with Philpott and Middleton on target again in a 2-0 victory at previous leaders Hythe.

Ton were among the relegation favourites and for the past couple of years have been left waiting for their first win.

So while nobody’s getting carried away, they’re entitled to enjoy leading the pack.

“We’re proving a few doubters wrong,” said Scorer.

“We’ve had a difficult couple of years, chasing wins going into September.

“I think the season before last we had eight points at Christmas, so to achieve that in our first four games is massive.

“And we didn’t have 12 points until late October/November last season, so to have those points on the board is massive.

“I’ve said to the boys it has been a tough couple of years and at the moment you’ve got to enjoy it.

“You’re never too high, never too low in football but when you are on that high, you’ve got to enjoy it and that seems to have resonated with the boys.

“We saw that we went top on Saturday and we’re not getting carried away but from where we have been as a club, it’s nice to be in a much stronger position.

“Clearly they felt good about where we are and it was so apparent in our performance on Monday because we were absolutely exceptional at Hythe.

“I thought we were good on Saturday but to back it up with the level of performance we did was outstanding.

“It’s nice to see what we’ve achieved in comparison to last season already and the season before, because we have got targets.

“All the talk about us being relegated, it’s outside noise.

“We ignore all of that. The pressure we apply to ourselves as a group comes from within and it comes from the culture and the environment you build.

“We’ve always been the same, we’ve always ensured the boys know what the expectations are.

“We’ve always tried to set high standards and what we have had over the last couple of years is a good core with five or six younger lads who are coming along on that journey and are going to be the next generation.

“They’ve learned to buy into what we’re trying to achieve as well and it’s all starting to fall into place.

“We’re in a really good position and what’s nice is these players are buying into what we’re doing because of the culture and the environment.”

Kennington visit Larkfield & New Hythe this Saturday (3pm).
