Ashford United manager Tommy Warrilow says his side don't realise how good they can be

Manager Tommy Warrilow says there’s more to come from his table-topping Ashford United side.

The Nuts & Bolts replaced Cray Valley at the summit of Isthmian South East after goals from Jay May, Josh Wisson and Gary Lockyer in a 3-1 home win against VCD last weekend.

They won all four league games in November to move a point clear of the Millers going into Saturday’s trip to Chichester.

Warrilow says his side have to keep pushing if they are to realise their potential this season.

“Someone’s got to be top and at the moment it’s us,” said Warrilow.

“It’s a big ask to stay there - we’re not even halfway through the season yet.

“You can’t get carried away but you have to enjoy the good times and the wins and we’ve had a great November.

“The squad’s competitive but I know we’re by no means the finished article.

“Take Jay May and Liam Friend out and it’s a relatively young squad.

“There are going to be times when mistakes are made but the boys have worked really hard and dug out some great performances.

“They sometimes don’t realise how good they can be, which is why I always want more from them, because I know there’s a lot more to come.

“I always sign players who can play in a few positions and that gives us strength in depth without having a massive squad.

“We’ve had a few knocks, Tommie Fagg was banned at the weekend, Tariq Ossai’s been out for a while and we’ve just introduced Gary Lockyer after his holiday, but a 17-man squad’s been enough and we’ve managed to ride that out.”

Full-back Ossai made his comeback from a fractured collarbone as a second-half substitute as Ashford beat VCD in conditions Warrilow described as “horrendous”.

He came through half an hour with no reaction, following a month out, while Warrilow was pleased to see Lockyer get off the mark in just his second appearance since joining from Kennington.

“Gal looked comfortable,” said the manager.

“We threw him on against Sittingbourne to run about like a lunatic up front on his own for half an hour but he had a few more people around him on Saturday.

“I said when he signed he didn’t have anything to prove to us, we just wanted him to relax and enjoy his football.”

Warrilow will keep his finger on the pulse but Lockyer looks set to be the last signing this side of Christmas.

He added: “Let’s get January out the way and see where we are in February and if we want to strengthen.

“We’re always looking but I don’t want to sign anyone for the sake of it. Why disrupt anything?

“Unless some superstar becomes available who will massively lift us, I don’t think there’s any point signing people who are no better than we already have.

“They’ve got to be better than we have, which is a big ask because the boys are doing really well.”

Ashford beat Burgess Hill 2-1 in the Velocity Trophy on Tuesday, Roberto Ratti and Wisson on target as Warrilow's side came from a goal down.
