Officers from the British Transport Police and paramedics, alongside the air ambulance, were called; however, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Southeastern services on the Bexleyheath line, which runs from Lewisham to Dartford, were affected, and trains were unable to run between Kidbrooke and Barnehurst.

Passengers were being warned to allow extra time to complete journeys as trains were cancelled, delayed or diverted via Sidcup and Woolwich.

Tickets could be used at no extra cost on London buses between London Bridge and Dartford, the underground between London terminals and Docklands Light Railway between Greenwich, Lewisham and Woolwich Arsenal.

Trains had returned to normal by 6.30pm.
