Trump in White House is the ultimate reality show

President Trump. The more you say it, the more comfortable it should sound, but somehow it doesn’t.

I woke up on Wednesday morning to hear the newsreader announce it was still a close call in the American election, but then heard how many points ahead Mr Trump was in the count.

Before long, it was all over and suddenly, the man who had been popping up on my Facebook page as friends shared his colourful speeches, had the title ‘president-elect’ in front of his name.

If nothing else, he’s proved the American Dream really does exist, and if you want it, you can achieve it.

I was filled with horror initially, but as we’ve been reminded more of the Clintons’ past, I’ve sympathised with American voters and the Hobson’s Choice they were left with.

It makes you wonder why you didn’t hear more from the other candidates (yes, there were others the Americans could have voted for).

Maybe, somewhere, subliminally, we have to take some responsibility for what’s happened.

For many, Mr Trump is known for hosting the American version of The Apprentice.

Our version is fronted by Lord Sugar, who is a government advisor on business. One of his aides, Karren Brady, was elevated to the House of Lords as a Conservative life peer in 2014, taking the title Baroness Brady.

Both are working hard to champion British business with the government but in an advisory role, not as the head honcho.

However, we all know how the Americans love our British history and maybe they thought they’d follow suit, but forgot that when it came to putting someone in charge of their country, it might be a good idea to choose someone who had just a little bit of experience in representing the people.

Who knows, Mr Trump could turn out to be the breath of fresh air so many people crave and lead us all into a brave new world.

Sixteen years ago, the idea of him in charge of the one of the most powerful countries in the world seemed so laughable The Simpsons aired an episode called Bart to the Future.

It showed a grown-up Lisa Simpson elected to the Oval Office after President Trump had screwed things up.

Let’s hope not everything in that episode will come true, but in four years time, America could be heading back to the polls and find the name Lisa Simpson on the ballot paper.
