Man arrested at Whitefriars in Canterbury after being spotted carrying weapon

A man has been arrested following reports he was seen carrying a weapon in a busy city centre.

Police were called to the incident at Whitefriars shopping centre in Canterbury at around 11.25am this morning after concerns were raised about a man carrying a crowbar.

At least two police cars were spotted near the town centre bus station, which is opposite the shopping precinct.

A 35-year-old man from the Margate area was arrested at the scene.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: “We were called at around 11.25am on Saturday (April 5) due to concerns about a man seen carrying a crowbar in Canterbury city centre.

“Officers attended and arrested a 35-year-old from the Margate area on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

“Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.”
