Jaffa Cake thief John Saunders, from Canterbury, jailed for Dartford burglary

A burglar is caught on camera clutching a pack of stolen Jaffa Cakes he swiped during an earlier break-in.

The picture was taken by a business owner, who confronted John Saunders as he tried to flee his shop after attempting to open the tills.

Police were called and discovered the 37-year-old, of Tennyson Avenue, Canterbury, had burgled a pub in Great Queen Street, Dartford, earlier that day.

He was still carrying the Jaffa Cakes and 300 cigarettes he had stolen from The Foresters on October 15.

He was arrested in nearby East Hill and later charged with two counts of burglary.

He pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court yesterday and was jailed for a year.

Investigating officer PC Peter Hyland said: "Rather than enjoy his stolen treats, Saunders will now experience the bitter taste of a prison sentence.

"As shown in this case, burglars like Saunders are opportunistic by nature and will attempt to steal anything not nailed down.”
