Fire engines called to Canterbury Cathedral

Canterbury Cathedral was evacuated after a fire alarm was triggered.

Seven fire engines were called to the scene at about 10am, and the historic landmark was temporarily closed.

Cathedral spokesman Jane Walker, who was evacuated into the precincts along with all other staff, said the incident was connected to ongoing work at the Cathedral.

She said: "The work does at times set off the fire alarms. The Cathedral does have to be closed when this happens, but there are no obvious signs of flames."

The alarm is said to have sounded in the site of the new organ block, which is about to be built.

She said early work was being carried out to wire CCTV cameras in the loft of the site.

A fire service spokesman said firefighters were sent to the scene as a precaution, and crews were helping Cathedral staff assess the situation.

The Cathedral is now open again.
