Canterbury schoolboy James Hodgkinson wins over judge Paloma Faith on The Voice Kids

A Canterbury Cathedral chorister found himself performing with singing star and judge Paloma Faith on The Voice Kids on Saturday night.

James Hodgkinson, 12, who attends St Edmund's School in Canterbury, was auditioning on the hit ITV show and gave a classical version of the Liverpool supporters' anthem, You'll Never Walk Alone.

It was Paloma who turned her chair after being impressed with his rendition and then asked if he could sing Walking in the Air from the Snowman so she could accompany him on the piano.

Prior to his audition, James told the programme that he wanted to prove that "choirboys can't just sing in the cathedral but do other things".

"I am quite nervous because today is one of the biggest opportunities of my life," he said.

He also revealed his other passion was collecting Wade Whimsies China and porcelain figures, of which he has around 450.

James, who was supported by his proud parents Chris and Angela, told the judges how he had been singing "ever since I was in my cot" and boarded in Canterbury where he was a member of the 24-strong Cathedral boys choir.

He said it required getting up at 6.20am every day for singing practice, which he does for 22 hours a week.

His selection by Paloma, who described it as "a match made in heaven", means he will perform again on the show.
