The disused public toilets in Wincheap are going under the auctioneer’s hammer with a guide price of £18,000 to £20,000.

Canterbury City Council has instructed auction firm Clive Emson to sell off the obsolete building near Victoria Road and it is one of 76 properties being sold.

Auctioneer Kevin Gilbert said: “We’re receiving a lot of instructions from local authorities for the disposal of surplus land and property, from Kent to Cornwall, and they always generate a lot of interest from bidders. Most end up selling.

“These are the latest WCs to be put on sale through us across the South of England – every single former convenience has sold in the past year because bidders can see conversion potential for commercial or residential, subject to all the necessary consents being obtainable, in excellent locations.”

A block of former public toilets in St John’s Road, Swalecliffe, put up for sale by Canterbury City Council through Clive Emson last month, sold for £51,000 – more than twice the guide price.

The auction takes place at the Clive Emson Conference Centre, Kent County Showground, Detling, Maidstone, at 11am on Monday, December 12.
