Euro 2016 fanzone in Canterbury proves hit with England fans

Crowds of England supporters were in full voice as the Westgate Hall was transformed into Kent’s biggest Euro 2016 fanzone.

About 500 people packed the city venue on Saturday and watched on giant screens as the Three Lions clashed with Russia in their opening group game.

A stoppage-time equaliser silenced the sell-out crowd late on, but organiser Chris Hawksey, of Republic Events, is hopeful of a better outcome as England take on Wales on Thursday.

He said: “It was great to be able to bring a proper football environment to Canterbury for the first time; with inflatable footballs, flags, hats and constant singing contributing to an incredible atmosphere at Kent’s largest Euro 2016 Fanzone.

“We were over-the-moon to be able to sell all our allocation of tickets two days in advance and be able to house hundreds of England fans together in one massive room.

“We can’t wait for the rest of the games and, hopefully, some more encouraging results.”
