Dragon's Den investors pore over Canterbury student Mark Wong's alcohol-free beer, Impossibrew

A former Canterbury schoolboy whose heavy drinking at university led him to create a new 'mood enhancing' non-alcoholic beer will be pitching his brew for investment on BBC One's Dragon's Den tonight.

Mark Wong, a former pupil of St Edmund's School, was so reliant on booze to relax while studying philosophy that his health suffered.

At the age of just 21, doctors diagnosed him with alcohol-induced liver damage and urged him to give it up.

"I was drinking quite a lot recreationally, as many students do, but began to feel unwell and was jaundiced," said Mark.

"Something was clearly wrong and then doctors told me I should stop, which I did.

"It was difficult for me because I had a passion for the drinks industry and the social aspect of drinking and always thought I might work in the industry in some capacity."

But it inspired Mark to investigate developing his own alcohol-free beer that would still induce the happy sensation he enjoyed.

"The aim was really to create a three-dimensional product, with taste, health and sensation, which is currently quite unique in the market," said Mark.

And it was after travelling to Asia and discovering 'functional' plants and herbs, he found the secret formula to produce an alcohol-free beer which, he claims, imparts relaxing properties without the downsides.

He worked on the special recipe in his kitchen at university in Durham with the help of Dr Paul Chazot, a world-leading biosciences professor, and came up with Impossibrew.

He tells the Dragons: "It offers a refreshingly crisp hoppy palate while containing only 66 calories and is packed full of active nutrients that support relaxation, without the drowsiness."

He asks the business tycoons for a £50,000 investment in return for 10% equity.

His business venture is a remarkable story for the young entrepreneur, who came to Canterbury to study aged 13 and barely able to speak any English, but who rose to become head boy at school.

Eager to see how he gets on with his pitch, St Edmund's School tweeted : "We can't wait to see former St Edmund's pupil Mark Wong on this week's episode of Dragons' Den on BBC One, pitching his company and concept Impossibrew."

Watch Dragons' Den on BBC One at 8pm tonight.
