Driver speeds over closing level crossing in St Dunstan's in Canterbury

Alarming dash cam footage reveals the moment an impatient driver dices with death at a level crossing.

The Fiat Punto driver ignored the warnings at St Dunstan's in Canterbury and zoomed across the railway tracks seconds before the barriers came down.

Video footage captured by Tarmac Guru School shows the restless motorist putting other lives in danger by overtaking an idle car as the red lights flash ahead.

Police say they are not investigating the incident.

But in light of the reckless driver's actions British Transport Police has posted reminders on how to act safely at level crossings.

Impatience at crossings is not uncommon, with drivers and pedestrians ignoring warnings.

In July last year, a man was accused of gambling with his life when he was spotted hurdling Sturry level crossing with two suitcases in tow, as a train approached.

As a result, a Canterbury councillor has this week called for changes at Sturry.

In 2017, a Range Rover smashed into the barriers at Chartham level crossing.

The council has now installed anti-idling signs at Sturry, St Dunstan's and St Stephen's crossings in a bid to encourage drivers to switch off their engines when halted.
