Former boss of East Kent Hospitals’ Trust Matthew Kershaw secures new role

A former chief executive of a hospital trust who left his job amid an A&E waiting times crisis has secured another top role.

Matthew Kershaw, who resigned from the troubled East Kent Hospitals’ Trust last year, will take up his new position as interim boss of Croydon Health Services Trust next month.

Nicknamed 'The Axeman' due to the controversial cuts he made at a previous role, Mr Kershaw was in charge of hospitals across Canterbury, Thanet, Ashford, Dover and Folkestone for two years.

The trust had the worst A&E performance in England last August - with just 61.8% of emergency attendees being seen within four hours, against the national target of 95%.

In September last year Mr Kershaw, who has 25 years experience in the health service, took up a post as a senior fellow with London-based health think tank, The King’s Fund.

He will now oversee health services in Croydon on a temporary basis until next summer.
