Five teenagers from Canterbury and Margate arrested after attack on exchange student

Five teenagers have now been arrested in connection with a reported gang attack on a young exchange student.

The victim - believed to be a German boy - was airlifted to a London hospital after he was assaulted last night in Whitefriars Street, between Tesco Extra and Primark.

Police have confirmed he remains in a serious condition.

Shortly after the attack, a 16-year-old boy from Canterbury was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

A 16-year-old girl, as well as two boys aged 15 - all from the city - have now also been arrested, along with a 17-year-old boy from Margate.

They remain in police custody.

The circumstances of the incident remain unclear, but a cordon was set up around the city centre while officers investigated.

This morning, MP Rosie Duffield said the attack was a "horrific and shameful stain" on Canterbury.
