A statement issued at 10.45am said: "River levels have risen as a result of heavy rainfall over the Stour catchment.

"Flooding of property, roads and low lying land is expected between 12.30pm and 3.30pm today.

"We believe there is a possibility of flooding to affect some properties around Grove Ferry and Plucks Gutter. We expect river levels at Grove Ferry to reach an approximate level of 2.45 metres above Ordnance Datum.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are actively monitoring the situation and will operate Stonar Cut later today. Please stay aware in case further warnings are issued."

They said there would be updates as the situation changes.

Minutes later, a lower level flood alert was issued for a wider area, this time for possible flooding for the tidal River Stour area from Fordwich to Stonar Cut including Stodmarsh, Grove Ferry, Plucks Gutter, Ash Level and Minster Marsh and people should be prepared.

The statement said: "River levels have risen as a result of heavy rainfall. Flooding of roads and low lying land is expected from midday today. We expect river levels to remain high until Wednesday.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are actively monitoring the situation and will be operating Stonar Cut. Please stay aware in case further warnings are issued. This message will be updated by midday on Tuesday, or as the situation changes."

It comes after Storm Bella wreaked havoc across the county.

At 11.50am, there were nine flood warnings in Kent – where flooding is expected and immediate action required – and 16 flood alerts, where flooding is possible and people should be prepared.

As well as the Stour, there were flood warnings also on the River Medway between Maidstone and Yalding, Little Venice country park at Yalding, the River Medway, River Teise and River Beult at Yalding and Laddingford, the Collier Street area, Horsmonden and Claygate, and the River Beult from Bethersden and Pluckley to Stile Bridge.

By 6pm, the Environment Agency withdrew the warnings for River Medway, River Teise and River Beult at Yalding.

A reminder was also issued for people not to drive through flood water.
