Fire crews respond to sofa engulfed in flames in Military Road, Canterbury

Dramatic footage has emerged of a sofa engulfed in flames on the pavement of a busy street.

A video sent to KentOnline shows the furniture ablaze in Military Road, Canterbury.

Four firefighters can be seen attending to the inferno, which broke out opposite All Saints Church and next to the Wemyss Court blocks of flats.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service says crews arrived shortly after midnight on Thursday to put out the fire.

A spokeswoman said: “We were called to reports of a sofa on fire which was on the pavement on Military Road in Canterbury.

“One fire engine attended and crews extinguished the fire using hose reel jets.”

There were no reported injuries during the incident.

Following the blaze, several residents spoke of their shock of seeing huge plumes of smoke in the area.

“Literally outside my flat,” one person said. “People are idiots.”

Another added: “That's my car next to it.

“Living further from the road and I was asleep [but] I just ran to the street to check my car.”

Police say they were not called to the scene and have not made any arrests.
