Counting is complete and the Kent County Council results for the Canterbury district have been declared.

Eights seats across Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable were up for grabs - with the Conservatives claiming five, Labour taking two and the Lib Dems one.

Before today, KCC - which looks after schools, roads and social care, among other things - was a Tory administration after the party regained control in 2017.

Two Canterbury City Council by-elections have also been conducted, with Labour holding onto the Westgate seat, and the Tories keeping Swalecliffe.

4.15pm: Mark Dance (Con), who was earlier elected onto the city council, has held onto his KCC seat.

He remains the representative for Whitstable West after narrowly claiming victory ahead of Labour's Naomi Smith.

3.44pm: Mike Sole has earned a place on KCC for the Lib Dems - taking the Canterbury South seat away from the Tories.

3.30pm: Alan Marsh (Con) has held onto Herne Village and Sturry with an overwhelming majority.

3pm: Lib Dem candidate Ida Linfield has lost her Canterbury City South seat to Labour.

She came third, behind Sergiu Barna (Con) and victor Mel Dawkins from Labour.

Cllr Dawkins is already a representitve on the city council, and now holds a seat on the county authority.

2.50pm: Former city council leader Rob Thomas (Con) has held onto his Canterbury North seat.

He earned 2,402 votes, while Paul Prentice (Lab) got 1,002 votes, Lib Dem candidate Alex Ricketts came third with 602, and Anna Peckham (Green) earned 509 votes.

2.45pm: Labour has gained the Canterbury City North seat from the Conservatives.

Graham Gibbens (Con) previously held the seat yet he has now retired, and the position has turned red.

2.35pm: The result for the KCC election for Whitstable East and Herne Bay West sees city councillor Neil Baker (Con) gain a seat on the county authority.

He triumphed by more than 1,500 votes ahead of Labour's Dan Allen in second place.

12.48pm: Labour has held onto the Westgate ward seat on Canterbury City Council.

Pip Hazelton triumphed with 842 votes ahead of Lib Dem candidate Alex Lister with 661.

Jake Warman (Con) earned 404 votes and Terry Thompson (Green) came fourth with 242. The turnout was 38.9%.

That rounds off the city council by-elections. The next results this afternoon will be for KCC seats.

12.30pm: Tory candidate Mark Dance has been elected as a city councillor for Swalecliffe. The Green Party got within 100 votes, but Cllr Dance now has a seat on the council.
