Coronavirus: Ice cream parlour in Herne Bay opens after claiming online announcement was a technical error

An ice cream parlour which claimed its opening announcement was a technical error has admitted selling the frozen treats today.

Makcari's in Herne Bay posted yesterday that its ice cream window would be open on what was forecast to be a "scorcher".

It prompted negative comments from customers - who were advised to stay at home to stop the spread of Covid-19 - and was quickly deleted.

Owner Hassan Hassan later explained to KentOnline that the post was a technical error.

He said it had been automatically scheduled by a company which he employs to maintain his online sites - although he would not divulge the company name.

He issued an apology stating: "During this bout of good weather we encourage EVERYONE to stay at home, stay safe and save lives."

But today, the seafront store has reportedly been selling ice creams - as well as takeaway coffees and goods - through its hatch.

Social media user Simon Cook has accused the business of putting "wealth before health", while Sarah Bailie remarked that it was "unbelievable".

A spokeswoman from Makcari's admitted: "The window is open due to the abuse we faced yesterday but it is only open for takeaways - which we're allowed to sell.

"If people ask for ice creams, that is what they will get.

"The abuse that my colleague faced yesterday was disgusting which is why we agreed to shut the doors."

She added: "Other businesses along the sea front are doing the same."
