Couple Angela and Ian Smart of Faversham lose 11 stone between them... and their children add another seven in Slimming World diet

A family from Faversham have lost a staggering 19 stone between them.

Angela and Ian Smart of Cyprus Road, who own a local plumbing and heating company, used to spend their days tucking into takeaways and scoffing chocolates and crisps.

But after a phenomenal transformation, they have shed the pounds and have been named as Slimming World Faversham’s couple of the year.

In just 13 months, Ian has lost seven stone and Angela has lost four stone, with their daughter Abbey losing six stone and their son Nathan losing two.

They used to skip breakfast, eat tonnes of calorific food for lunch, snack on fatty foods between meals and devour a takeaway for dinner.

Ian said: “I now only fill up the van with fuel in garages that do not tempt you with loads of sweets and chocolates at the door, as that was a huge temptation all the time.

“We work long hours at our business, which ended up being an excuse to eat badly.

The couple believe that shops and garages are trying to get you to buy quick, comfort food as soon as you walk through the door.

Angela said: “We have changed everything we eat. We now eat three balanced, healthy meals a day.

“We found that online shopping was one of the best ways to control what we eat.

"With online shopping, I buy exactly what I need and don’t get distracted by the rubbish food that supermarkets tend to put right in front of your eyes.”

Angela believes that it’s the word ‘diet’ putting people off and it should be promoted as a lifestyle, and she says that Slimming World has been a lifeline for the both of them.

The couple now enjoy an active life, with swimming and regular visits to the gym and Angela says it’s a real bonus being able to go shopping.

“When you’re big, your confidence is so low, but now I can go into a normal shop and take clothes right off the rack – it feels great.

“But it’s not just about changing the way you look, it’s about becoming a healthier person.”

Angela has said that the response from family and friends has been uplifting and encouraged them to fight the bulge.

“Friends have all just said ‘wow’ and now, I don’t get tempted by treats because I don’t ever want to go backwards" - Angela Smart

One friend even thought that Ian had become ill because he had lost so much weight.

Angela added: “Friends have all just said ‘wow’ and now, I don’t get tempted by treats because I don’t ever want to go backwards.

“We have both had to work very, very hard to achieve this and the thought of going back is scary. As far as I’m concerned, that woman who turned up to Slimming World on her first day and stood on those scales, she doesn’t exist anymore.”

Slimming World consultant Sally de Vere said: “Both Ian and Angie inspire so many people, showing families can slim together eating normal foods and never going hungry.”

Sally runs a meeting on Tuesday evenings at 7pm at Faversham Baptist Hall. For information, call her on 07778068769
