Coronavirus Kent: Light homes blue for the NHS and key workers

People across Kent are being urged to use Christmas illuminations to "light their houses blue" for heroic NHS and key workers.

Last night hundreds of thousands of people across the country clapped at their doorsteps in an incredible show of support for those on the frontline of the fight against coronavirus.

And now they are being encouraged to decorate windows with blue festive lights to create a visual show of appreciation to those still working to keep the country going.

It would see houses across the county illuminated next Thursday night, when another Clap for Carers event is set to take place.

Thursday Night Lights is the idea of restaurant worker Catherine Oulds, who joined her mum, Teresa, in the street last night to applaud all key workers.

"I was so moved by how many people took part, and watching the videos of it happening in London was incredible," she said.

"In our village you could hear people clapping and some people banging pots and pans.

"Our NHS staff are doing an incredible job - as are all the supermarket staff, delivery drivers and anyone else still working.

"Last night just made me think what else can we do to show our support."

Landmarks across Kent were also illuminated blue last night as a show of support for the NHS, in-part inspiring Miss Ould's idea for people to light up their own homes.

The 30-year-old created an event for her street in Beltinge - a small village on the outskirts of Herne Bay - but hopes the initiative will be picked up further afield.

"I just thought it would be a visual spectacle that would help bring everyone together even more," she said.

"It would be lovely for key workers driving home from work, or out on their daily walk, to see a colourful show of support, and to let them know they are appreciated.

"I have an underlying health condition so can't go out and pick up people's shopping, or anything like that, so I want to help in a different way.

"If you haven't got blue lights, use whatever colour you can - maybe they can represent the key workers who aren't NHS staff.

"It would be lovely if everyone took part."

Miss Oulds suggests people turn their lights on every Thursday night and switch them off before going to bed.
