He spent three months recovering at King’s College Hospital in London, with his distraught parents Paul and Lauren by his bedside.

According to family and friends, he had been in a coma but started saying lyrics from the band’s songs when he first woke up.

He even received a message from the girl group on Twitter wishing him a speedy recovery.

To help the family cover train fares and other expenditures, neighbour Lee Tonks got a group of cyclists together for a fundraising ride to the hospital from Aylesham and back.

The kind-hearted cyclists who rode 130 miles in the eight-year-old's honour met with him and the nurses who cared for him on the paediatric neurology ward.

Mr Tonks, one of the first people on the scene after the crash, has been overwhelmed by people’s support. He has raised £2,953, smashing the original £500 target.

“I still can’t thank everyone enough for supporting and helping on the day of the ride,” he said.

“I want to thank the lads that took part, if they weren’t there it would have been a tough day for me.

“I would also like to thank all the people who have donated to the JustGiving page.

“I really couldn’t thank you all enough, the support has been amazing.

“The money will go towards helping Charlie and the family for anything they need and for the support for him.”

The youngster suffered serious head and hip injuries in the crash on Thursday, May 23, and Mr Tonks admits when he first rushed out to help, he didn’t know if Charlie was alive.

He said after the horrendous incident, the “amazing” Aylesham community rallied round, offering love and support to the family and donating in their droves.
