Southeastern said trains between Faversham and Dover Priory had been put on hold while the bridge was examined for damage.

At 4.35pm, it tweeted to say: "Due to a lorry striking the bridge in the Canterbury East area, trains between Faversham and Dover Priory are currently not able to.

"Response staff are en route to examine the bridge but until then delays and alterations can be expected."

Then, shortly before 5.20pm, the firm said the line had reopened, but that there may be some alterations while engineers worked to recover the service.

The bridge, which is just off Wincheap Roundabout, is no stranger to being hit by large vehicles.

In October, a low-loader truck carrying a digger crashed into the rail bridge and got stuck.

It led to train cancellations and a temporary closure of the A28.
