New homes scheme revealed for former garage site in Canterbury

An award-winning architect has revealed a scheme for a luxury block of flats on a former garage site in Canterbury.

Guy Holloway has drawn up proposals for the development of 35 homes with underground parking at Northgate Garage.

The design has been tweaked "to reduce bulk" following comments made in a public consultation and is now said to fit in better with the surrounding buildings.

The block would face onto Union Street, Victoria Row and New Ruttington Lane and is a mix of one, two and three-bedroom flats, most with balconies or terraces.

But not all the flats will have parking as only 25 spaces are being allocated.

The principle of replacing the former car showroom and garage with homes was largely welcomed in the public consultation, especially after residents were assured the accommodation would not be for students.

A planning application for the scheme has now been submitted to the city council, reference number CA//19/01463
