M2 shut after car fire near Faversham

The M2 has reopened after three cars caught fire following a crash this morning.

The road was closed in both directions between junction 6 for Faversham and junction 7 Brenley Corner, causing four-mile tailbacks.

Emergency services, including police, fire and ambulance are responding to the incident on the London-bound carriageway and two people have been taken to hospital.

Traffic was held for nearly two hours after the smash with one lane of the London-bound side finally reopening at 10am.

The coastbound carriageway opened again around an hour after the crash, which involved four vehicles just before 8am on the London-bound carriageway.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance service (Secamb) said paramedics left the scene shortly before 10.30am taking two patients to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford for further checks and treatment.

Details of their injuries has not been released.

Police are warning there will be long delays while the traffic clears.

No one is believed to be trapped in any of the vehicles.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service is advising motorists to follow alternatives routes.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called at 8am regarding a collision involving four vehicles on the London-bound carriageway of the M2 between junctions 6 and 7.

"Officers, the South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service are currently at the scene and fire crews are extinguishing fires in three of the cars.

"Drivers may wish to consider alternative routes while emergency services are dealing with the incident."

Highways England is advising there are still 40 minute delays on the road with some drivers stuck in traffic for more than an hour on the London-bound carriageway.

Three fire engines and a bulk water carrier were sent to put the fire out.

Crews remain at the scene making the road safe to reopen the London-bound side.
