A28 in Canterbury to be shut on Sunday as Network Rail survey frequently-hit Wincheap bridge

One of the most frequently used roads in Canterbury will be shut on Sunday.

Urgent structural surveys need to be carried out on the rail bridge crossing the A28 at the Wincheap Roundabout - forcing the closure of main route through Wincheap.

Kent County Council says the A28 will be shut in the general vicinity of the bridge, with marshalls on site to offer directional help.

The road is due to be open as usual along the main stretch from the Maidens Head pub, however, there will be no through route to the city.

It is expected to shut to be from 2am until 2pm, however the closure could last longer.

The pre-planned structural survey comes just days after the bridge was hit by low-loader truck carrying a digger.

The work was already pencilled in for Sunday before the most recent incident.

The official diversion for drivers heading out of the city takes them along New Dover Road, briefly onto the A2 for the Bridge turn-off, back onto the A2 and up to Thanington.

For motorists heading into Canterbury, the diversion is vie-versa.

Network Rail will be carrying out the bridge surveys.
