He was later charged with attempted murder.

Police and paramedics had been called to the house at about 1.25am following reports of a disturbance.

The road was sealed off while officers and a forensic team launched an investigation.

Ms Smith was rushed to a London hospital with what were described as serious injuries.

Gawler, who lives in River View, has appeared at Maidstone Crown Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was remanded into custody until next year, when a trial is expected to be heard at Canterbury Crown Court in May.
