Canterbury man charged after woman assaulted near River Stour in Kingsmead Road

A man has been charged with assault with intent to commit a sexual offence after a woman was attacked near the River Stour.

Police were called to the Kingsmead Road area of Canterbury on December 17, after a woman was reportedly punched and kicked while she walked by the river in the early morning.

Police taped off a section of riverside pathway following the incident

She did not suffer serious injuries.

An investigation was launched and, following inquiries, Jack Smith was arrested on Saturday.

Mr Smith, 23, of St Stephen's Road, Canterbury, has now been charged with assault with intent to commit a sexual offence.

He appeared before Margate Magistrates' Court today, and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on February 17.
