Man in court on university rape charges

A MAN accused of two rapes at universities in Kent and Sussex 15 years ago appeared in court today.

Paul Collings, 38, of Peartree Field, Icklesham, Winchelsea, East Sussex, is alleged to have raped an 18-year-old at Kent University in Canterbury and a 21-year-old woman at Sussex University at Falmer, near Brighton.

Collings appeared at Maidstone Crown Court via a prison TV link.

Andrew Lewis, defending, said Collings is expected to plead not guilty to the charges.

The alleged attacks took place in October and December 1989. Collings is also facing two counts of indecent assault on another 18-year-old woman at Kent University.

Collings, who was arrested last week in a joint operation between detectives in Kent and Sussex, was remanded in custody but will return to court tomorrow for a bail hearing.

His plea and directions hearing was adjourned until February 21.
