Michelin chef Stephen Harris praises the Refectory Kitchen in Canterbury and the Harbour Street Tapas in Whitstable as top ‘cheap eats’

Two Kent restaurants have been picked out by a top chef as his favourite places for a “cheap eat.”

Stephen Harris, the chef at the Michelin-starred Sportsman gastro pub in Whitstable picked The Refectory Kitchen in St Dunstan's Street, Canterbury, and the Harbour Street Tapas in Whitstable, as his top places to grab a meal for two for under £40.

Speaking to Sky News, Mr Harris particularly raved about the “Aussie-style” brunch at The Refectory where he liked the “restaurant standard” eggs benedict.

Other dishes such as scrambled tofu, pancakes with strawberries, French toast and merguez sausage are also on the menu.

He warned that there was often a queue, but promised the food was “worth the wait.”

Of the Harbour Street Tapas, he recommended the jamon Iberico, and said he had been taking his son there since he was three. “The staff,” he said, “are great!"

The venue also serves patatas bravas, tortilla, baby squid in aioli and all the other dishes you would expect from a Spanish restaurant.

The Harbour Street Tapas had already been given the thumbs-up by KentOnline’s own restaurant critic, Rhys Griffiths in August last year.

Mr Harris was one of dozens of Michelin chefs taking part in a nationwide survey to find the best cheap eateries conducted by the Money team at Sky News.
