Police officer 'spat at' in Hollowmede, Canterbury, after attending suspected arson attack on flat

A police officer is thought to have been spat at as they attended a suspected arson attack on a flat in Canterbury.

Patrol cars, two fire engines, and at least four ambulances were sent to Hollowmede after the blaze broke out on the first floor of the property.

It was reported an officer at the scene had been spat at, potentially echoing a similar assault seen in Whitstable at the weekend.

A 40-year-old man from Canterbury was arrested on suspicion of arson and assaulting an emergency worker and remains in custody.

Fire crews had been called to the blaze at 3.40pm yesterday and extinguished the flames within two hours, with no serious injuries reported.

A police investigation into the circumstances is ongoing, but the fire is currently being treated as arson.
