Princess Charlotte to be christened by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby

Royal baby Princess Charlotte is to be baptised by the Archbishop of Canterbury next month, it has been announced.

The new arrival – born on May 2 – will be christened at a private ceremony in Sandringham, Norfolk.

Kensington Palace said in a short statement: "Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to announce the christening of Princess Charlotte will take place on Sunday, 5th July at St Mary Magdalene Church, Sandringham.

"Princess Charlotte will be christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby."

The primate also christened Princess Charlotte’s older brother Prince George at St James's Palace in October 2013.

That service was also an intimate gathering, with around 60 friends and family members attending.

Due to recent changes in the rules governing accession to the throne, Princess Charlotte is fourth in line.

Prince William and his wife are currently living at Anmer Hall in Norfolk, where they are expected to bring up their children.

The house is around three miles from the church which is where the royal family usually attend a Christmas service.

The date in early July may have been chosen as it fits with the Queen's plans as she will be going to Balmoral for the summer.
