The bosses of a pub have left a community in shock after announcing its sudden closure.
Chris and Tracy Steed took over The Royal Oak in Blean, near Canterbury, five years ago.
But in a post shared on the pub’s Facebook page this week, they announced its closure, leaving punters disappointed.
“It is with deep regret we announce we are now closed permanently,” it says.
“Tracy and I would like to thank all the customers and staff over the years for all their support, good times and help.
“We had some good times and memories here, even through the tough times, and wish everyone all the best.”
They went on to say they are sure the “brilliant little boozer” will “bounce back”.
KentOnline approached the pub for comment but did not receive a response.
Many peoplewere quick to show their support to the landlords.
Jane Hope said: “We've enjoyed Christmas meals here for the last three years. This is sad to hear.”
Garry Foster commented: “Sorry to hear this, mate. You did some lovely food. Pubs are always hard and you did a great job of it.”
Sally Wills added: “We loved your pub. The staff were really good. Great entertainment, food and banter. Upset for all of you.”
Sadie Emma Young said: “We really enjoyed coming to the pub to play your darts team. We always had a great night.”
KentOnline’s Secret Drinker visited the no-nonsense village pub back in 2023.
“The Royal Oak knows it isn’t flash, but it doesn’t want, or need, to be and by keeping things simple plays to its strength,” he wrote.
He says the landlord – like the pub – was “straightforward, to the point, and effective”. “Effusive he certainly wasn’t, some might argue a barman only needs one expression,” Secret Drinker added.
