It is understood police were called to St Stephens Road which led to the closure at Kingsmead roundabout, preventing traffic from reaching Station Road West.

As a result, its rail replacement bus services are being diverted instead to nearby Canterbury East station.

No details as to the nature of the incident have yet been revealed.

However, the situation has now ended and the station has reopened, although Southeastern said: "There will be fewer buses than normal between Ashford and Canterbury West and Canterbury West and Ramsgate/Margate whilst we work to get things back to normal."

Kent Police has been contacted for comment.
