Residents were left without power and more than a dozen homes had to be evacuated as emergency services dealt with a gas leak.

Littlebourne Road in Canterbury remained shut this morning between Warwick Road down to St Martin's Hill.

SGN engineers worked hard throughout the night and have now completed the emergency work to its gas main.

The road fully reopened at about 10am today and power has since been restored.

People living in the surrounding area were urged to close windows and doors - but this was lifted after emergency repair works were carried out.

Fire crews, SGN engineers and police were in attendance - with about 14 homes being evacuated last night as a precaution.

Residents were asked to share the information with family, friends or neighbours in the area who may not have access to the internet or social media.

Police said this morning they were called to the area yesterday at 6pm to assist gas engineers at the site and were assisting with traffic management.

Drivers were advised to expect delays in the area and to use alternative routes where possible.

UK Power Networks said this morning their engineers are still waiting for the gas board to complete their repairs before they can restore power.

But power was restored at 10.26am following investigations and repairs to the fault.

"We're sorry for the disruption this power cut will be causing, especially the impact it will be having on the start of your day," they said earlier this morning.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Emergency repair works have been carried out by SGN engineers to contain the gas leak in Littlebourne Road, Canterbury.

"The earlier advice for those living nearby to close windows and doors, has been lifted."
