Thousands of women in Herne Bay made a defiant stand against cancer by taking part in Race for Life.

An army of mums, daughters, sisters, grans, aunts and friends wore every shade of pink imaginable as they assembled at Hampton Pier on Sunday.

Each competitor on the 5km run raised money for Cancer Research UK, with organisers expecting Herne Bay’s event to reach its £130,000 target.

Westgate-based runner Michaela Hill came home first but all kinds of runners took part, from 88-year-old Margaret Andrews to pupils from Simon Langton Girls School.

Herne Bay event manager Hayley Reynolds said: “We are so very grateful to all our participants, supporters and wonderful volunteers who helped make Race for Life in Herne Bay such an amazing event.

“This year women who took part placed their back signs on a wall, their back signs explain their reasons for running the event.

“I would now urge the ladies who did this to think back to this moment, and take one last step – by returning the money they’ve raised so it can go into vital research to help more men, women and children survive cancer.”
