Sturry Church of England Primary School in Canterbury celebrates maintaining Outstanding Ofsted grading

A primary school has scored top marks for its “welcoming, nurturing” environment and for ensuring children “rise to the their high expectations.”

Ofsted inspectors have rated Sturry Church of England Primary School in Canterbury as Outstanding in all areas, maintaining the grade first achieved more than a decade earlier in January 2015.

The education watchdog highlighted how the school’s values of perseverance, leadership, collaboration and support were deeply embedded in its culture.

Head teacher Michelle Mannings, who has led the school since January 2022, said: “To maintain an Outstanding rating for a full decade is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our staff, the hard work of our pupils, and the invaluable support of our parents and the wider community.

“We are incredibly proud that Ofsted has once again recognised the strength of our school and its dedication to providing the very best education for every child.”

The school achieved an Outstanding grade in all of the categories; quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and early years provision.

Inspectors commended the approach to reading and curriculum development, noting that pupils develop as confident, fluent readers and benefit from a carefully structured and engaging curriculum that enables them to achieve their best.

Particular praise was also given to the school’s leadership and management.

The report stated: “There is no complacency but an unwavering determination to build on current successes and continue to make a positive difference to pupils’ lives.”

Inspectors also highlighted the welcoming and inclusive environment, adding: “Pupils love coming to this welcoming, nurturing, and inspirational school.

“Staff work tirelessly to ensure that all pupils thrive and flourish in an inclusive learning environment and rise to their high expectations.”

Rachael Howell, chief executive officer of The Stour Academy Trust, which manages the school, said: “Sturry’s ability to achieve Outstanding judgements across all key areas under the latest Ofsted framework is a testament to its deeply embedded culture of excellence.

“Sturry has actively adapted to the evolving expectations of modern education and with Ofsted now scrutinising each judgement individually, this result demonstrates that the school excels in every aspect.

“Our leadership team has not stood still; instead, they have embraced innovation, strengthened the curriculum, and continuously pushed for higher standards.

“This latest inspection reassures parents that Sturry is not only maintaining its exceptional standards but thriving under the most up-to-date and rigorous assessment criteria.”
