Pure Magik in Canterbury blames Brexit for closure

An independent shop in Canterbury high street is blaming Brexit for its closure.

Pure Magik, a New Age store in St Peter's Street selling items from incense to clothing, has closed its doors.

But a sign spotted in its window today lists Britain's exit from the European Union as among factors that have reduced its profits by two-thirds.

The sign reads: "Pure Magik has ceased trading.

"A combination of becoming VAT reg, lower footfall, increase in business rates and Brexit has seen takings cut by two-thirds.

"It's a sad time for the high street. F*** this Tory government."

It has already received dozens of comments on social media.

Dean Garbett, who posted the photo, said the expletive was a "bit inappropriate for the high street".

But others felt sympathetic towards the shop, and its owner Jasmine Wake.

"The sense of frustration is appropriate," wrote Vince Cross. "Imagine if you were the owners and a complicated set of circumstances outside of your control forced you to close.

"I agree though, it could be a bit more professional than it is."

The shop has been contacted for a comment.
