British Transport Police has now confirmed officers were called this morning following concern of the welfare of a woman.

Trains between Ramsgate and Ashford via Canterbury West have been altered or delayed.

The incident has led to traffic chaos in the Sturry area of Canterbury.

Traffic on Sturry Hill is at a standstill and backed up the Broad Oak turning.

One driver told KentOnline: "I was driving to Canterbury from Thanet. The barrier at Sturry level crossing went down at 8.02am.

"There was a high speed train blocking the crossing and I was informed by the driver that someone may have ended up on the line.

"There are traffic delays around Sturry area. Because people have been turning around in the traffic, they have been crashing into each other. I saw one crash."

Another driver in Sturry said: "I haven’t moved for 20 minutes and I usually just breeze through. I am travelling at a snail's pace at the moment."

All Sturry Road Park and Ride services are running with severe delays.

Southeastern tweeted "trains are on the move" through Sturry.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to the line in Sturry at 8.08am this morning following concern for the welfare of a woman.

"Paramedics also attended and a woman has now been taken to a place of safety."
