Canterbury City Council allow travellers to stay in Kingsmead car park after one gives birth

Council enforcement officers allowed travellers to stay in a city car park for six days - because one had just had a baby.

The authority showed some leniency after discovering one of the group had given birth at the William Harvey Hospital.

She returned to the caravans at Kingsmead car park with her newborn child later in the week, where officers carried out welfare checks.

The travellers, who came in four caravans, remained in the car park from Monday until Saturday morning, when they left of their own accord.

A small amount of litter left by the group was then cleared by the council.

The area is no stranger to travellers arriving for lengthy periods, with dozens of caravan pitching up on Kingsmead field last summer.

The city council applied for a court order to evict them, eventually forcing them to leave the site.
