Tributes are pouring in for a beloved cat, whose sudden death in a tragic accident has left his thousands of fans heartbroken.
Former stray Griffin, who lived with his owner Rachel Craft in the King’s Mile area of Canterbury, attracted a legion of followers who tracked his audacious adventures across the city.
A Facebook group, called Gallivanting Griffin, has more than 7,400 members who regularly shared sightings of the moggie.
But in a post at about 4pm today, the admin of the group said the feline was hit by a car this afternoon on the University of Kent site in Canterbury.
“He was kindly brought to Canterbury vets by some passersby but was pronounced dead on arrival,” the emotional post states.
“I don't need to tell you all how loved he was and how much he will be missed by so many of us.
“And I'd like the focus to be on what a brilliant life he had.
“I appreciate that not everyone agreed with Griffin's way of life, but I do hope that comments will be respectful as our family mourns the loss of a member.
“In fact, I think it's fair to say that Griff had many families, and many homes.”
The post continues: “Thank you so much to every single person who was a part of his short but wonderful life.
“Those of you who looked out for him, kept him safe and protected him from harm. Those of you who donated after his accident, and those of you who bought his merchandise, which helped fund his wonderful charity. And those of you who simply enjoyed watching his antics, even those who never even met him.
“Griffin brought joy to so many people and I hope that we can all still feel that joy when we remember him.”
The four-year-old Romanian rescue was often seen relaxing in shops, homes and the University of Kent campus.
Last year, the feline went missing after he was reportedly hit by a car, but was found 15 miles away from home in Newtown Green, near Ashford.
He was spotted with injuries by pub-goers at the Alfred Arms, although thankfully, he recovered.
Tributes have poured in for the moggie following his tragic death.
Charlie Brown wrote: “I can’t believe it. Can we help in any way? I'd love to help fund a Griffin statue up at the university in memory.”
Dannielle Fagg said: “Absolutely heartbreaking. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times and he always brought us such joy.
“Sleep tight, gorgeous Griffin. You will forever hold a special place in many people’s hearts of Canterbury.”
Donna Novis added: “So sorry to read this. He was a real legend and lived life on his terms. Here is to him having more adventures over the rainbow bridge.”
