Police are warning people to beware when using cash machines, after a device used to steal money was found on an ATM in Aylesham.

The kit was fitted to the slot where cash is dispensed from on the cashpoint at the Co-op in Market Place.

When an unsuspecting victim uses the machine, the money they try to withdraw is held in the device until the thief later returns to collect it.

It was discovered on Saturday, October 5, before the suspect had the chance to come back and retrieve the money.

Officers have since released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in connection with the theft.

He is described as a white man, aged between 25 and 40, 6ft tall, of slim build, with short dark hair and was clean shaven.

He was wearing dark shoes, blue jeans and a dark brown coat.

PC Christian Ford said: "When using a cash machine, make sure it doesn’t look like it’s been tampered with.

"If you think it has, don’t use it and contact the police. Never attempt to remove the device."

PC Ford wants to hear from anyone who witnessed anything suspicious, or might have noticed their cash was missing when they used the machine.
