Canterbury City Council's new social distancing signs for shoppers leave some confused

A council's new social distancing signs have left some residents scratching their heads.

As non-essential shops finally reopened their doors yesterday following months of closure, Canterbury City Council unveiled signs advising shoppers on how to stay safe while out and about.

The banners feature the simple phrases 'Hello! It's great to see you', 'take your time' and 'keep a safe distance'.

Several different designs have been rolled out at each of the district's main shopping areas, in Canterbury, Herne Bay, Tankerton and Whitstable - with each featuring images of items including a bucket and spade, and a bunch of flowers.

But arrows pointing between the images - linking together a pair of flip flops and an ice cream cone in the Whitstable signs - have prompted some to question what message they are supposed to convey.

On Twitter, Whitstable-based web design agency Savy Design slammed the signs as a "nice way to waste some cash".

They wrote: "But what do they mean? I get the text because I can read, I just struggle with the graphics and the arrows as it suggests a point of action is required!

"First rule of marketing, hope the consumer has some idea about the message you are trying to communicate!"

The city council says it has been contacted by multiple people who are unsure about new signage.

A spokesman said: "If you were to only see one of them, you might wonder what on earth it's all about - as some people who have messaged us have said.

"But if you look across the piece, then the message is clear: welcome back to the high street, take your time - because a) there will be queues and b) we want people to relax and enjoy their time here - and keep your distance.

"Views on campaigns like this will always differ. Some people want messaging that is more friendly, others less. People have different views on colours or use of symbols.

"We know that we'll never please all the people all the time. In fact, just pleasing some of them, some of the time, is a challenge.

"But it's got people talking, which is great, and if it gets them into our fantastic shops to spend a few quid, even better."

Some local businesses have praised the council's efforts.

Canterbury-based digital marketing agency Digital Beans said: "Congratulations on rolling these out quickly. They are effective, even if branding 'experts' have a problem with them. We think they look great!"

Meanwhile, Herne Bay's independent business group Buy in the Bay said: "We’ve had such positive feedback today and we love the signage for the Bay!"
