A famous but endangered pygmy hippo described as a “diva” by keepers has made Kent her new home.
Haggis, whose rivalry with another of the species from Thailand saw her go global, even appearing on one of the biggest shows on American television, is settling in at Wingham Wildlife Park, near Canterbury.
She has arrived from Edinburgh Zoo to add to the international breeding programme for the endangered species.
A statement released by keepers at Wingham this morning said: “Everyone’s favourite diva and queen of the side eye has arrived safely.
”We were thrilled to welcome precious pygmy hippo Haggis [on] Tuesday night and she has been settling in beautifully after her long journey.
”Haggis has joined us as part of the breeding program for her species and today is a double celebration - as not only are we celebrating Haggis’s arrival but today is also her very first birthday - the first of what we hope will be many here with us.
“Please remember that you can’t view Haggis just yet but we will regularly be keeping you up to date on all her progress and antics on our socials.”
The tiny hippo - native to the forests and swamps of West Africa - was born in 2024 and quickly became one of the Scottish attraction’s most loved residents.
So famous is Haggis, she had her own range of merchandise sold by her keepers in the Scottish capital.
Her rivalry with Moo Deng - a TikTok-famous Thai pygmy born at about the same time - was even mentioned on Saturday Night Live in the USA.
Haggis’s parents, Otto and Gloria, remain at Edinburgh Zoo.
However, her species are classified as ‘endangered’ due to a declining population caused by habitat loss and hunting.
It is believed their numbers are less than 3,000 in the wild, with the species’ habitat threatened by logging, mining, and agriculture.
