Kent Cricket's Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence in Canterbury set to host one-off England women v Australia in Kia Test as part of 2015 Ashes Series

Kent will play host to Ashes Test cricket in 2015 when Canterbury’s Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence is the stage for England’s women to face Australia next summer.

The Kia Test match will be part of an extended 164th Canterbury Cricket Week in August and is the only longer-form match in a seven-game series which features three Royal London ODIs and three NatWest T20 internationals.

The match will be the first women’s Test to be screened live by Sky Sports and is set to feature Kent and England skipper Charlotte Edwards, currently plying her trade for Western Fury Down Under this winter.

She said: “It’s brilliant news that The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence will host the Women’s Ashes Kia Test match.

“The Test match has proved instrumental in recent series, so I hope that we can take advantage of the excellent wicket at Canterbury to secure the four points up for grabs.

“It’s also brilliant that the match will be played as part of an extended Canterbury Cricket Week, which I am sure will generate great crowds and an exciting atmosphere.”

Edwards is set to be joined in the England squad by batsmen Tammy Beaumont and Lydia Greenway and bowlers Natasha Farrant and Laura Marsh.

Kent will host on the Australian male tourists in June, the opening fixture of the tour, while the Australian women will also hold a training camp at the revamped County Ground, Beckenham, in July, before the opening ODI on July 21.

Kent chief executive Jamie Clifford said: “We are delighted to host the only Women’s Ashes Kia Test of the summer. I’m sure it will be as keenly contested as the men’s series.

“With the Australian men playing Kent at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence in June and the women’s side visiting in August – it promises to be a memorable summer for Kent Cricket.

“We have a proud tradition in women’s cricket and we hope the Women’s Ashes fixtures will encourage more girls to play the game.”

Entry to both Australia matches in Canterbury are included in Kent All Rounder and Championship Plus Memberships and an option for Six Pack package holders.

Women’s tickets go on general sale in March.
