Sam Billings reflects on Kent's defeat to Lancashire in Vitality Blast quarter-final

Sam Billings was disappointed with Kent’s batting display in their T20 Blast quarter-final defeat to Lancashire.

Kent lost by six wickets at The Spitfire Ground on Thursday night.

The home side struggled with the bat and scored 133-9 from their 20 overs, which was their lowest total of the competition.

Captain Billings said: “It’s just hugely frustrating. That’s our worst batting performance we’ve put on for the year. It just shows that batting first was the right decision but we just batted terribly.

“It’s just a real dull end for our T20 campaign where we’ve probably been the best side in the country, or not far off it.

Kent slumped to 22-3 after the first 3.2 overs losing Daniel Bell-Drummond (0), Joe Denly (13) and Heino Kuhn (8).

Billings top scored with 37 from 37 balls and a late flurry by Imran Qayyum (21 from 14 balls) saw Spitfires up to 133.

Billings said: “Early wickets were just one of those things. I don’t think we had quite the composure to really take the game deep and put their seamers under pressure at the end.

"I was looking to see out that ball (against Zahir Khan) and then take on the seamers and get us up to a decent score.

“It just took someone else to get a run a ball 20-odd and stay with me. Calum Haggett got a few away and then Imran Qayyum at the end. We were probably 10 or 15 runs short.

“I’m very proud of the efforts we’ve done in all formats this year. As long as we learn from it.

“It’s just the composure with the bat to take the game deep and then when the seamers come back on you will get a few away. If we get up to 145 or 150 the game would have been done.”

Batting was not easy for Lancashire either with Jos Buttler being stumped by Billings off Denly in the first over.

Keaton Jennings hit an important 46 from 40 balls while Dane Vilas (30 not out) and Jordan Clark (29 not out) saw their side to victory with eight balls to spare.

Billings added: “We tried our best with the ball. It’s probably one of the most challenging tasks I’ve had as captain tonight.

“Our effort in the field was fantastic. We were just 10 or 15 runs short.
