Kent Cricket League round-up: Sandwich and Blackheath seal first wins while Canterbury suffer defeat

Alex Smith racked up figures of 4-8 off just 3.3 overs as Sandwich beat HSBC by 10 wickets to tick off their first win of the Premier Division campaign.

Electing to start with the bat, HSBC struggled to contain a fierce bowling display which saw Smith assisted by Kent's Grant Stewart (4-19) and Fred Klaassen (2-20).

The visitors were eventually bowled out for 48 after 22.3 overs before Sandwich cruised to their target without losing a wicket in five overs.

Opener Sadiq Hassan finished as HSBC's top scorer and the only member of his batting line-up to reach double figures, with three departing for ducks, another three adding just two each and two others managing to put just one run apiece to their name.

Zack Fagg (31) and Tom Chapman (18) made no mistake of the reply to help Sandwich respond to back-to-back defeats to start the season.

Canterbury meanwhile suffered their first loss since returning to the top flight as they were beaten by three wickets at title-chasing Lordswood.

The away side were bowled out for a respectable 232 from 50 overs primarily thanks to a third-wicket stand worth 100 runs between Joe Gordon (55) and Stuart Drakeley (51), both of whom reached their respective totals in 65 deliveries.

Sam Burt contributed an unbeaten 34 in between some fine work with the ball from Lordswood's Chris Piesley (3-34) and Jack Laraman (3-46), while Canterbury also benefited from 30 in extras to somewhat compensate for low scores at the tail end.

Lordswood enjoyed a smooth start to their chase courtesy of a 50-run opening partnership between Jack Laraman (22) and Linden Lockhart (71), the latter of whom had in fact supplied 41 in comparison to his partner's six.

Lockhart proceeded to lead the response with 71 from 70 balls before Shaun Piesley (34), Brandon Conradie (31 not out) and Taylor Chandler (17 not out) helped complete the job by reaching 236-7 with five balls to spare.

Blackheath elsewhere overcame Sevenoaks by 112 runs to pick up their first victory of the season following an impressive outing with the bat.

Opening duo George Wells (42) and Dipayan Paul (76) put their side, who had opted to bat first, in the ascendency early on, which Tanweer Sikandar (70) later built off with a significant knock of his own at No.3.

Mohammad Ashraful added another 47 until the hosts ran out of overs with a score of 271-6.

Eight single-digit scores, including three ducks, saw Sevenoaks rarely threaten to reach the target set for them, despite the efforts of leading scorers Michael Barber (62) and Luke Schlemmer (44).

Ashraful was prominent again, this time with the ball in hand as he worked towards 5-31 and two maidens from his 10 overs.

Bexley also triumphed by 69 runs in their meeting with Tunbridge Wells after Calum MacLeod struck 106 from 125 balls.

Put in to bat, the home side began steadily via Matt Cross (46) until MacLeod added the defining runs to make up for three ducks, including one diamond, and three other single-digit scores from elsewhere on the team.

David Smith (4-40) and Marcus O'Riordan (3-43) did their utmost to limit those around MacLeod, with Bexley finally being bowled out for 232 from their 50 overs.

Tunbridge's reply was then dismantled by Jason Benn (4-14) and Freddie Foster (4-43), who ensured Sam Stickler would finish as his side's top scorer on just 42.

Aristides Karvelas (31) and Alexander Williams (20) tried to rescue the situation, only to see the wickets tumble on the way towards Tunbridge finishing all out for 163 off 44.3 overs.

Beckenham protected their position at the top of the table with a three-wicket victory over Bickley Park following Alex Blake's 142 from 134 deliveries.

Having chosen to bat first, Park were led by Safwaan Imitiaz (64) and Daniel Magin (66) as they reached 255 all out after their 50 overs.

A worthy target could have been even higher had it not been for Stuart Binny (4-35) and Johan Malcolm (4-43), the former of whom was responsible for dismissing both of Park's aforementioned high scorers.

William MacVicar also enjoyed a standout day in the field, finishing with three catches and a run out.

Blake offered an unbeaten 142, including 10 fours and six sixes, in response at No.4, along with support from Finnan Bryan (22) and Rob Clements (21 not out) in hunting down a winning score of 258-7 with four balls remaining.

Beckenham are joint-top with Lordswood on 59 points and identical records, while Tunbridge Wells stay in third despite their defeat at the weekend.

Bexley, Bickley Park and Canterbury all sit on 43 points beneath the top three, followed Sandwich on 29 points and Blackheath on 28.

The bottom two is then made up of Sevenoaks on 27 points and winless HSBC on six.
