Canterbury Rugby Club head coach Andy Pratt says they are still not safe in National 2 South despite beating fellow strugglers Lydney

Head coach Andy Pratt warns there is still work to do in the National 2 South relegation scrap and says Canterbury Rugby Club’s season remains “all about survival.”

The city club boosted their survival hopes as they moved out of the drop-zone with a 22-9 win over relegation rivals Lydney on Saturday.

A second-half onslaught at Merton Lane brought 17 points for the home side and sent the visitors back to Gloucestershire four points adrift in the bottom three.

With four games left, Canterbury are fourth-bottom and just two points behind Southend, who will be their next opponents, on the road on March 28.

Sixth-bottom Clifton and seventh-bottom Launceston will visit Merton Lane in Canterbury’s final two home games, giving hope that Canterbury’s survival chances remain in their own hands.

Pratt said: “They are all big games, although Saturday was particularly big for both teams. Both teams showed nerves but we overcame them the better and that made the difference in the end.

“Winning that game was important but it wasn’t everything. We are not out of it yet and have still got a lot of work to do."

With no fixture, Pratt has given his squad the day off on Saturday, explaining: “We picked up a couple of knocks and it gives us a bit more time for them to settle down, so the break isn’t a bad thing.”
