Lydden Hill hosts British Rallycross Championship on Bank Holiday Monday

The three-way fight for the British Rallycross Championship crown is set to continue at Lydden Hill on Bank Holiday Monday.

Julian Godfrey, Ollie O’Donovan and Mark Higgins are separated by just a single point at the top of the Supercar standings with three rounds remaining.

Heathfield-based Godfrey, who already has five titles to his name, has locked horns with O'Donovan (Ford Focus) and Higgins (Peugeot 208) throughout the season, with the trio tussling over top-spot since the opening round at Silverstone.

Godfrey holds a slender one-point advantage over his rivals, and will be full of confidence ahead of his home round having scored victory in his Mitsubishi Mirage at Croft last month.

Higgins - a former British Rally champion - won on his first visit to Lydden Hill during the second round of the championship earlier this season.

Up to 10 Supercars are expected in the headline category, with Kevin Procter, Roger Thomas and Andy Grant also set to contest the event.

In the supporting categories, Canterbury's Tristan Ovenden leads the MSA Supernational Rallycross Championship points in his potent Renault Clio V6.

He will face competition from Dartford's Paul Coney (Vauxhall Corsa) and Sittingbourne's Darren Scott (Citroen C2).

On Saturday, September 8, talented rallycross driver and engineer Ryan Lawford will be remembered at Lydden Hill at round seven of the BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship.

The 26-year-old - who died five years ago - was a star of the British Rallycross Championship's Stock Hatch category in a red Peugeot 205 and worked in the British Touring Car Championship with Andrew Jordan as an engineer.

Dubbed the Ryan Lawford Memorial rallycross event, organisers are building a strong entry list for the meeting, which will include racing from the Super Modified and Pre-1995 classic categories.

Will Gollop - the 1992 European Rallycross champion - will attend the event, having mentored and worked with Lawford for a number of years.

Tickets for the British Rallycross event on Bank Holiday Monday cost £20 on the gate with children 13 and under going free. Track action starts at 9am. Visit www.lyddenhill.co.uk.
