Singles titles for Kennedy and Bristow

BROMLEY'S Joe Kennedy and Angie Bristow,, of Tunbridge Wells, took the men's and ladies singles titles at the Kent Closed Table Tennis Championships held at Canterbury High School.

The main upset in the men's singles, was the defeat of Bromley's fifth seed Henry Buist, by William Power of Tunbridge Wells.

Power then beat Maidstone's Chris Martin and, in the quarter final, caused another upset, beating fourth seed Phil Cox of Bromley, 11-8 11-9 11-7.

Medway's Christian Thompson and Stephen Beerling (Thanet) both reached the semi-final stage as expected, and produced the best match of the day with Thompson showing some of his old international class winning 11-7 7-11 5-11 11-3 11-9.

In the other semi-final, top seed Kennedy finally ended Power's run 11-4 11-5 12-10, and then had a surprisingly easy 11-6 11-8 11-5 win over Thompson in the final. Bristow, fresh from a year touring in Australia, won the ladies singles, comfortably beating North West Kent's Jackie Mersh in the semi-final 11-4 11-7 4-11 11-9 and in the final Kim Mudge (Bromley) 12-10 11-6 11-7.

Anusha Seneviratne (Ashford) had exceeded expectations by coming through a strong group stage that included past Kent champion Carly Hart (Maidstone) and Hazel Clucas (Tunbridge Wells), and went on to beat top seed Gemma Yarnley (Folkestone) 11-5 11-7 11-7 in the quarter final.

Kim Mudge had beaten fourth seed Tina Stewart in the quarter final and finally ended Seneviratne's run in the semi-final.

Medway's John Harley retained the under-17 boys singles title on Sunday and Ashford's Anusha Seneviratne repeated her Saturday win over Gemma Tarnley to take the under-17 girls title.
