Canterbury City manager Chris Woollcott resigns after nine-game winless run

Canterbury manager Chris Woollcott has resigned after a nine-game winless run.

City drew 1-1 at Southern Counties East Premier Division bottom side Tower Hamlets on Saturday to end a sequence of eight successive defeats in all competitions.

But Woollcott, who has been hindered this season by much-publicised financial problems at the club which nearly saw them pull out of the league, has walked away from the role with the club stating he was under no pressure despite the bad run of results.

In a statement, Canterbury said: "The club have reluctantly accepted a request from first-team manager Chris Woollcott to step down from his role with immediate effect.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to Chris for all his hard work, which has more often than not been in difficult circumstances.

"During the enforced breaks in football, Chris was constantly working behind the scenes in trying to improve things in the background. He has been responsible for bringing some good people into the club and trying to raise awareness locally. He has been a fundamental part of our club and will be missed.

"Ultimately it is a results business, and Chris was aware there was absolutely no pressure from the board. However he has made this decision himself and while we are disappointed, we are supportive of him and wish him all the best in the future."

On Twitter, Woollcott said: "After two years, I’ve made the decision to part company with Canterbury City FC.

"Unfortunately off-the-field issues (Covid and financial issues) have massively disrupted what I wanted to achieve at the club, but I’ve learnt a lot in that time.

"Wish the club all the best."

Woollcott's assistant Sam Wilson will take over alongside player-coach Danny Lawrence for the remainder of the year with City stating the situation will be reviewed in the New Year.

Canterbury sit seven points above the relegation zone in the Premier Division in 15th spot, with 16 points from 19 games.

They host Chatham at Salters Lane this Saturday before trips to Deal (December 27) and Bearsted (January 3) over the festive period.
